I have been after a big fly box for some time now as the sandwich baggie has not been cutting it. Still, I just can't swallow the $40 or $50 for a highly quality, big fly box. Using a Plano ProLatch 2-3715, some closed cell foam, a straight ruler, and handy scissor work I crafted out a nifty, cheap big fly box similar to a Cliffs bugger barn for under $10.
Press down firmly with the lid open, bottom side up |
This creates an outline to cut by |
Use scissors to cut out the liner insert |
Use a straight edge and a sharp knife to cut lines halfway through the foam |
This creates hook slots similar to those found on Cliffs boxes |
Slide the hookpoints into the slots for solid, easy retrieval |
This box is waterproof and holds quite a few flies |
Congrats on your new fly box insert! One thing I wanted to point out to others that you did correctly was using a straight-blade to slice your closed-cell foam. This helps prevent jagged edges. However, if you're ever working on an open-cell foam project, serrated blades are the way to go.
