DIY $10 Big Fly Box

I have been after a big fly box for some time now as the sandwich baggie has not been cutting it. Still, I just can't swallow the $40 or $50 for a highly quality, big fly box. Using a Plano ProLatch 2-3715, some closed cell foam, a straight ruler, and handy scissor work I crafted out a nifty, cheap big fly box similar to a Cliffs bugger barn for under $10.
Press down firmly with the lid open, bottom side up
This creates an outline to cut by
Use scissors to cut out the liner insert
Use a straight edge and a sharp knife to cut lines halfway through the foam
This creates hook slots similar to those found on Cliffs boxes
Slide the hookpoints into the slots for solid, easy retrieval
This box is waterproof and holds quite a few flies

  1. Congrats on your new fly box insert! One thing I wanted to point out to others that you did correctly was using a straight-blade to slice your closed-cell foam. This helps prevent jagged edges. However, if you're ever working on an open-cell foam project, serrated blades are the way to go.
