Weather: 82 and sunny with a 5-10 mph intermittent wind
Water: clear and 69
Lures and Techniques: Green Pumpkin Senkos, Texas rigged and waky style, and 1/2 ounce hand tied green pumpkin-watermelon E-jigs
It amazes me how quickly seasons can change. A few weeks ago we were battling heavily stained water, cool temperatures, and pre-spawn bass. Today, the water was gin clear, sans pollen, and pushing seventy degrees. The spawn is also in full swing with male bass patrolling and guarding nests and couples staking out shallow love nests making the code difficult to crack. Some were hyper aggressive obliterating anything encroaching upon their turf. Others, cautious and weary, would not bat an eye at the lure dropped into their domain. Hence the theme "Boom or Bust." That is what makes fishing the spawn so absolutely ridiculous; you can see quality fish mere feet away, but can not get them to commit. Today's buffet included pumpkin green Senkos, rigged wacky or Texas, with a side of green pumpkin-watermelon jig; a hand tied, flipping model dubbed the E-jig. Most fish were caught on the Texas rigged Senko worked s-l-o-w on subtle, six inch pulls. Those fish were plastered to the bank in mere inches of water. Sight fishing, I put a couple of smaller, aggressive fish in the boat by dropping a wacky Senko in their faces. The kicker, a spawned out female that probably weighed four pounds last week, assassinated my jig from the cover of a fallen log. A ton of quality bed-fish were seen, but they were all in a negative mood excluding the twenty plus inch toad that ripped a Senko completely off the hook. My goals for the trip: A, build upon tournament focused techniques and, B, break in my new St. Croix Mojo Bass Drophot rod. This marks three trips in a row with quality jig fish; Check. Six nice bass with three that measure for Kayak Wars; Check.
