Three Essential Mods For the Jackson Kayak Elite Hi/Lo Seat

Jackson Kayak's Elite Hi/Lo seat is by far the most intuitive seat design on the market.  Aside from extraordinary comfort, its versatility is unparalleled.  The Hi/Lo feature allows for two totally different paddling experiences.  Lo offers performance paddling and more balance, while the Hi position allows under-seat, tackle storage and a higher vantage point.  The built in storage bag; yep, it stores stuff.  Aside from all the versatility when strapped in, the Hi/Lo doubles as a great beach or camp chair.  To compliment all this versatility, I am hi-lighting three, essential modifications to make your chair even more awesome.

Flush mount rod holders are great, but they have a penchant for secretly dumping your expensive combos in the drink.  Nothing is worse than turning around to check out that splash, only to find your favorite setup has walked the plank.  These nifty rod leashes, which I will detail shortly, are fashioned out of shock-cord, zip ties, and cable cuffs; a cheap and easy build.  That's $500 worth of rod and reel sticking out of that flushie, so I am not taking any chances.

Although some caution against the potential hazard inherent in paddle leashes, I'm not losing my blade!  Where do you think the saying "Up a creek.." came from anyway?  Kayak fishing is an ambidextrous, multitasking affair that usually keeps your paddle either hanging precariously off your lap or lightly wedged under shock-cord or in some crevice.  A 240 paddle has a knack for ending up in the drink during the moment of battle so this is absolute necessity in my mind.

The Fish Gripper is one of my favorite fishing tools and is one of the only fish keepers that will hold a striped bass, alive, for a safe release.  Loop knot one end of a three foot section of paracord, then slide the opposite end through the lanyard hole on the Gripper's handle and form a double knot.  Secure your Grippers to the frame of your Hi/Lo, then lock them onto your catch's mouth and drop him in the drink.  This is a must have for the tournament fisherman or the trophy hunter.  Nothing hurts worse than having your kicker fish execute a double round house while you fish your camera out of the dry bag.
If your Jackson boat is missing these three mods, then you are indeed missing out on some great features that will save you a ton of headache.
