Fighting The Wind On Lake Varner

Weather: High 50s with 15-20 mph winds
Water: stained and 53
Lures and Techniques: Rattle Trap in Red Craw
Today a friend, Stewart Venable, and I hit up Lake Varner in search of large mouth.  It is creeping slowly towards the crescendo of the pre-spawn feeding frenzy; the time of year when those egg laden females make their last assault before they release their offspring into the wilds.  Pre-spawn is a really special season as bass, females, are at their absolute heaviest.  As the water temperatures rise steadily and the days become longer, those large females will work their way from the deeper wintering and staging areas to the shallows in search of prey.  Varner didn't relinquish one of her queens on this trip, but the window of opportunity is slowly opening.  Maybe next time......
